Working Hours to be Reduced from September 1st

By Patrick Beech
In an effort to safeguard the welfare of workers and to provide them flexibility, working hours will be reduced from 48 to 45 hours from September 1, 2022.
Deputy Human Resources Minister, Datuk Awang Hashim said, this was also in line with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Convention.
He also said amendments will be made to the Employment Act to reduce the working hours accordingly.
“In addition, the amendments also introduce a new section on flexible work arrangements, to allow employees and employers to carry out work according to the suitability of working hours, working days or workplaces, including working from home for emergency situations such as the Covid-19 pandemic,” he told the Dewan Negara.
He said, as of today, there was no proposal or engagement for the government to set four working days a week.
Awang Hashim said this when replying to a question from Senator Md Nasir Hashim’s question about the government’s stance on four working days in a week, especially in the private sector.
