Universiti Malaya (UM) student Mifzal Salihin made the university proud when he won the Higher Education Minister's Award and was crowned as the National Student Figure in conjunction with the 2022 Student Figure Award Ceremony organized by the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) tonight.
Mifzal, 22, a third-year student at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, was selected to receive the award as a result of his outstanding involvement in the field of entrepreneurship that benefited his university colleagues.
Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, Mifzal said he has created an online tutoring class called AfterKelas.com for the past three years and up to now, involving the participation of between 40 and 50 UM students.
"These are active tutors who teach Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics subjects. Their monthly income can be estimated between RM1,000 and RM1,500," he said.
The eldest of four siblings from Shah Alam, Selangor also shared his ambition to become a successful entrepreneur upon graduation.
Mifzal took home RM3,000 in cash along with the main trophy, scholarship and certificate presented by Minister of Higher Education Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
Earlier, during the opening speech, Mohamed Khaled said the KPT Tokoh Siswa award is a platform to appreciate and recognize the excellence of students in various fields including academics, personality and co-curricular.
"We want to recognize and encourage students who have demonstrated leadership excellence through direct involvement in various fields of soft development," he said.
He said the KPT's responsibility is in line with the desire to ensure that every student gets the best education from quality teaching staff.
He said at the same time, KPT's role is to provide all the space and opportunities for students to get the life experience they need in reaching adulthood.
