A student from Sibu in Sarawak recently emerged as the champion in the classical category of the World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA) violin competition in the United States.

Imran Azim, from SMK Bukit Assek also won a silver medal each in the contemporary and original works categories, as well as a bronze each for the jazz and open categories.

The competition was held in Anaheim, California.

"I attribute my success to the strong support from my family, teachers and friends.

"The competition was very tough, but I was confident and felt I could do it," he said.

Upon his arrival home, the Form Five student was greeted by his family, friends, teachers and also the Bukit Assek Assemblyman, Joseph Chieng.

His father, Iskandar Bujang said it has been a challenge for Imran to strike a balance between his violin training and study.

"He is preparing for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination, his training time is quite limited. He only practices on weekends and on weekdays, he plays it for 30 minutes from 9pm to 9.30pm," he added.
