There have been numerous stories about people who eventually turn their hobbies into high-earning monthly incomes.

Meet 66-year-old Mohamed Omar whose passion for planting papayas now earns him up to RM20,000 a month.

Mohamed, from Kelantan, said he began planting papayas as a hobby in 2019 with 30 Callina papaya trees.

“I was surprised when these papayas, which have thick, red, and fragrant flesh, gained high demand,” said the father of seven.

He said he decided to sell the fruits and soon found that there was growing demand from customers.

"Due to the high demand, I decided to turn my hobby into something bigger and not have over 2,500 papaya trees on 16 hectares of land," he said.

Mohamed’s key to success is having his stand close to the farm, where he sells packs of papayas for a reasonable RM10 for 3 kg.

Later this year, he is also planning to expand his papaya business by opening an additional 1.6-hectare plot.
