After 46 years, Malaysia has reclaimed its glory with a clean sweep of the badminton singles titles. Both Kisona Selvaduray and Lee Zii Jia, aged 21, secured gold medals in the badminton singles category in Manila yesterday.

As reported by The News Straits Times, Kisona’s win came as a surprise as she was a last minute replacement for Goh Jin Wei who had to withdraw from the Philippines games following a surgery.

However, Kisona who ranked 104th in the world rose to the occasion and emerged as champion! Despite losing the first game with a score of 20-22, Kisona outdid herself by winning the next two games with a score of 21-14 and 21-13 against her opponent, World No 37, Ruselli Hartawan.

“This is the biggest win of my career. I am very pleased with my achievement,” Kisona told The News Straits Times.

In the mens’ badminton singles category, Lee Zii Jia maintained a steady game over his opponent, Loh Kean Yew of Singapore with a score of 21-18. This year marks Lee’s second time at the SEA Games.

According to Malaysiakini, Lee said, “Apart from the Olympic and Asian Games, the SEA Games is among the major competitions for badminton. After the victory, I feel like going on leave to release all the pressure.”

That’s not all – national doubles pair, Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik secured our nation’s third gold medal in badminton after defeating Thai pair, Bodin Isara-Maneepong Jongji.

Congratulations, Team Malaysia! You have done our nation proud.
