The Malaysian squad has booked its ticket to the quarterfinal of the 2023 Sudirman Cup after defeating India 5-0 at Suzhou, China yesterday.
Earlier, the mixed doubles, Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie contributed the first point for the national squad after winning over Dhruv Kapila-Ashwini Ponappa 21-16, 21-17. Right after that, men's singles player, Lee Zii Jia put Malaysia comfortably ahead with a win to over K Srikanth 21-16, 21-11.
Women’s singles player, Goh Jin Wei pulled off an upset by defeating 2019 world champion, PV Sindhu. Her victory sent the crowd into jolts as many did not expect her stellar performance.
Men's doubles, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik then went against Chirag Shetty-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and the women's doubles, Pearly Tan-M Thinaah faced Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand. Each won their respective matches with ease (21-18, 21-19 and 21-15, 21-13), marking a 5-0 victory over India in the second act of Group C.
"I didn't even think about winning or losing today, just focused on the match. What's important is that I gave everything and was very lucky to record one of the biggest wins.
"My presence here is not to prove to anyone, I just want to show the best action to those who always support me. After this, I need to prepare my mental strength," said Jin Wei.
Although they have already confirmed their place in the quarterfinals, Malaysia will face another tough match against Taiwan tomorrow in the battle for the group champions before the draw for the quarter-finals takes place.
