Barbie is highest movie earner so far this year

It has been a great year for movie buffs but what may be surprising to many is that the highest earner for 2023 was Barbie which chalked up US$1.4 billion worldwide. 

The fantasy, comedy movie released in July tells the story of Barbie who travels to the real world looking for answers to a crisis in Barbieland. 

Coming in second was the animated adventure movie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie which included the voice cast of Chris Pratt and Seth Rogan. 

This movie made US$1.3 billion worldwide and tells the story of a plumber who goes on an adventure of a lifetime in the Mushroom Kingdom to save a princess. 

Director Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer takes third spot with US$942 million which revolves around a powerful atomic bomb that could change the course of history and World War II. 

Fourth and fifth spot earners are Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 with US$845 million and Fast X with US$704 million.

This year's notable flops include The Flash, which grossed less than US$270 million, and Shazam: Fury of the Gods with just over US$100 million.
