After more than a decade since the 2009 James Cameroon film Avatar was released, the sequel is finally coming to theatres this month.

Avatar: The Way of Water follows the Sully family, led by Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), the troubles that follow them and their efforts to keep each other safe while battling to stay alive and enduring tragedies.

The film that has been named filmmaker James Cameron’s most expensive and risky project so far, has been named one of the ‘most expensive’ movies ever made.

Avatar: The Way of Water budget has been revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, claiming it is between the $350m (£292.4m) to $400m (£334m) range.

The massive budget makes the upcoming sequel one of the most expensive films of all time, alongside Endgame and Avengers: Age of Ultron. The first Avatar had a budget of $237m (£198m).

Avatar: The Way of Water's plot will be a fully-encapsulated, standalone narrative, as will the other sequels, but will also be part of a meta-narrative that extends across Avatar: The Way of Water, Avatar 3, 4 and 5.

However, James Cameron stated that if The Way of Water underperforms at the box office, then Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 may not be made. Avatar 3 will release regardless.
