When Malaysia’s No. 1 property website, PropertyGuru, launched its ‘Home Giveaway’ Contest months ago, they asked Malaysians to nominate someone, or deserving families who were in need of a home. The winner would eventually win a brand new, fully-furnished freehold home.
With over 1000 nominations sent in, PropertyGuru shortlisted 5 Malaysians, all with hopes and dreams of being a homeowner. 5 entries, all with their own stories to tell, were in the running for this once-in-a-lifetime win. The Grand Finale, from 6th to 31st May, called for Malaysians to vote for the story that touched them the most.
On 27th July, one of the 5 finalists received an extremely sweet surprise. With 130,000 votes, Dr Basri Husin and family are now proud homeowners of a freehold, fully-furnished home worth over RM600,000 at Tropicana Metropark, Subang Jaya.

At 32, Dr Basri, from Padang Serai, Kedah, was dealt a big blow when he was told that he needed to use a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Doctors who found a blood clot in his spinal cord, diagnosed him with partial paralysis.
For the young father of two, he saw his life shatter. After his spinal operation, Dr Basri felt hopeless and defeated, but his wife, Ashikin Aini Abdullah was by his side all the way. She was his strength and rock.
Dr Basri, now 39, is Personal Assistant to Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr Mahmood Zuhdi Abdul Majid. As viewers watched him being announced the winner via a video on PropertyGuru’s social media platform, one can only cry tears of joy together with this family.
