National track cycling rider, Muhammad Fadhil Mohd Zonis won the silver medal in the men’s 1 kilometer (km) time trial event at the Asian Track Cycling Championships in New Delhi, India, yesterday.
The race which took place at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex Velodrome saw Muhammad Fadhil record a time of 1 minute 01.639 second (s).
Yuta Obara of Japan won the event with a time of 1: 01.118s while host rider Ronaldo Singh Laitonjam grabbed the bronze after clocking 1: 01.798s.
Meanwhile, the junior category saw Zulfahmi Aiman Zulkarnain also take home the silver medal in the men’s scratch race.
Kim Hwarang of South Korea won the gold while Indian rider Birjit Yumnam finished the race with a bronze medal.
Sabahan Lim Chun Kiat, came close to becoming the first ever Malaysian to win a medal in the men’s individual pursuit at the Asian meet. However, he settled for fourth place as India’s Vishwajit Singh defeated him to claim bronze medal. Japan’s Shoi Matsuda defeated Korea’s Park Sanghoon in the finals.
Nevertheless, Chun Kiat’s coach Louis Pang was still proud of his performance.
“I am proud of this achievement,” said Louis. “Of course, there are areas we can improve on as he is still young. Considering he is not in the national programme, I am happy. We gave it our best shot.”
Chun Kiat earned an Asian meet ticket after winning his event in last month’s National Championships title in Nilai.
